Is your favourite local park a green flag winner?

by Editor

Four parks in our borough are now proudly flying the Green Flag – an honour reserved for only the best green spaces in the country.

Pennington Hall Park, in Leigh, Jubilee Park, in Ashton, and Mesnes Park and Alexandra Park in Wigan, have all met the high standards of the Green Flag scheme this year.

Sadly no parks in Lowton or Golborne met the standard – but with these four parks on our doorstep there will be plenty of us who still visit and enjoy these parks in neighbouring towns.

Which is your favourite local park?

Do you spend a lot of time at one of the green flag parks in Wigan borough? Or do you prefer an open space that’s a little closer to home, here in Lowton or Golborne?

Or maybe you travel somewhere else to enjoy a park or green space in another town or borough?

About the Green Flag award

The four parks in our borough are among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award this year – the mark of a quality park or green space.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Cllr Joanne Marshall, lead member for Greener Wigan, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive four Green Flag Awards for the borough.

“We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining all these parks to such a high standard.

“We must also say a huge thank you to our devoted parks Friends Groups and volunteers throughout the borough who help us to maintain our beautiful green spaces as part of The Deal.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

“Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”
