Congratulations to five ambitious friends from Golborne, who conquered the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in aid of a good cause close to their hearts.
Stephen Cooper, Jake Smith, Michael Musins, Christian Foulds and Peter Hodgson all decided to take on on Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike… and gave themselves just 24 hours to do so!
It was all in aid of Alder Hey Children’s Kidney Fund, as a way of saying thank you for the hospital’s treatment of Stephen’s son, who was diagnosed with two rare kidney disorders six years ago, when he was aged just 10.
Taking on the three peaks challenges was one way in which dad Stephen wanted to say “thank you” and give something back to the hospital, helping any other children who find themselves in the same position today.
And despite the weekend of the climb being incredibly wet and rainy, the friends still managed to smash their targets – finishing all three peaks in the nick of time! They completed the climbs in just 23 hours, 47 minutes, and hit their target to raise an impressive £2,000 for Alder Hey – with more money still being collected.
Stephen, who works for Centreco UK Ltd, said completing the challenge wasn’t without it’s problems – including the travelling time from countries to even get to the peaks before they began to scale them. And the challenge was almost cut short when they arrived at Ben Nevis to find there was a UCI bicycle event running that same weekend – and everything was closed off! But with determination, the group still managed to find a way to climb and meet their deadline, too.
Stephen said: “It’s an amazing and a massive achievement to give back to Alder Hey Hospital and to help children with kidney disorders.
“I’m thankful that every one who participated in the challenge was supportive and achieved what they needed too.”
Amongst the local businesses who’ve supported the group are Iconic Fitness and Xtreme Nutrition in Golborne. Thanks also goes to Jon Williams form MD Centreco UK Ltd for sorting out last minute vehicles.
It’s not too late to sponsor the group – donations can still be made via their Go Fund Me page.
