When are the local school Open Days this year?

Will your child be moving up to high school in the next couple of years? Now’s the time to start thinking about which of our local schools might be right for them.

And with the deadline for applications to start in Year 7 next September coming up on October 31 2023, all our local secondaries are holding Open Days in the coming weeks to help you make up your mind which setting is right for your child.

Meanwhile, an increasing number of local primaries are also holding events to invite prospective parents to look aound their school, too. It’s a chance to get a real feel of the school, its teachers and what it can offer your child.

You have longer to make your decision about primary schools, as the deadline for applications is not until 15 January 2024.

Here’s when the local school open days take place:

High school open days in Lowton and Golborne

Golborne High School

When: Golborne High School’s Open Day will take place on Tuesday, 5 October. The event runs from 6-8pm with Headteacher talks at 6pm and 7pm.

Lowton Church of England High School

When: Monday, 25 September. Tours start from 4.15pm.

Culcheth High School

When: Thursday, 5 October at 5.30pm.

Hope Academy, Newton-le-Willows

This Newton-le-Willows high school will be hosting an Open Evening on Wednesday, 27 September 2023 from 5-8pm. No booking is required.

There are also two Open Mornings planned, on Wednesday 18 October and Wednesday, 25 October 2023 from 9.15am – 10am. Pre-booking is required for these tours – visit the school website to reserve your place.


St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School, Ashton-in-Makerfield

St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School

When: An open evening for Year 6 parents and prospective pupils takes place on Wednesday, 27 September 2023, from 4.30 – 7.30pm. There will be a headteacher’s address at 4.30pm. 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

To attend, you must register your place on the school’s website in advance.


Primary School Open Days in Lowton and Golborne

Golborne St Thomas’s CE J&I School

Come along and see for yourself what the school has to offer on the following dates:

Wednesday, 20 September, Tuesday 10 October or Wednesday 22 November – all at 9.30am.

How do I apply for my child’s school place?

Visit Wigan Council’s website to find out more about how to apply, and to read details for each individual school.

What’s the deadline for applications?

If your child is due to start at a new school next September, applications are now open for secondary schools, whilst primary admissions open from 30 September.

You must apply before 31 October 2023 for a secondary place for next year. You will find out which place you’ve been offered on 1 March 2023.

If you’re applying for a Primary School place, you have a little longer – the deadline is 15 January, 2024. You will find out which place your child has been offered on 16 April 2024.
