Gas main replacement works which were delayed from earlier in the year will now go ahead during the school summer holidays.
The works are to be carried out by Cadent, affecting the Slag Lane / Church Lane crossroads by St Luke’s Church and the Co-op, and will begin on Monday, 24 July.
There was outcry earlier this year when it was announced that a 12 week project would begin in April – potentially causing huge traffic issues and affecting access to school for parents and pupils.
As a result, the decision was taken to move the works back to school summer holidays – when the disruption will be less. The works are also taking place over a shorter period of time, so should be complete by the time children return to school in September.
However, you can still expect queues and delays whilst the work is carried out.
What do the planned works involve?
The work is neccessary to upgrade the ageing gas mains which serve local homes – so whilst the work is inconvenient, it is essential. The new pipes will also have less impact on the environment than the older ones they will replace.
The works will affect people travelling along Slag Lane, or parents dropping off at Lowton West School
What will happen, and which roads are affected?
It is expected that the work will take place on Slag Lane, outside St Luke’s Church from Monday 24 July until Friday 4 August.
From Monday 31 July until Saturday 12 August, there will be work on Chester Avenue.
And from Monday, 21 August until Monday 4 August, the works will be taking place on Laurel Grove.
Some bus stops may be suspended whilst the works are carried out, and some footpaths closed too. Alternative stops and routes will be signed.
More information about the work and what is being done is available on Cadent’s website.
