Local election 2023: Results for Lowton and Golborne

by Editor

Local elections took place yesterday to decide on local councillors for Lowton and Golborne.

Counting in the local elections has been taking place this morning – and we now have the results!

Election result in Golborne and Lowton West

Susan Gambles, Yvonne Klieve and Gena Merrett out campaiging ahead of the local elections 2023.

Congratulations to Labour candidates Susan Gambles, Yvonne Klieve and Gena Merrett, who were all returned back to office for another term. Golborne and Lowton West remains a Labour held ward.

The full results were as follows:

  • Brian Aspinall – Reform UK: 276
  • Stanley Crook – Conservative: 460
  • Susan Gambles – Labour: 1320
  • Richard Houlton – Conservative: 409
  • Yvonne Klieve – Labour: 1501
  • Gena Merrett – Labour: 1362
  • Angela Roberts – Conservative: 418
  • Stuart Worthington – Liberal Democrats: 187

The turnout in Golborne and Lowton West was 25.4% – slightly down on 2022, when it was 28.3%.

Election result in Lowton East

Some big changes have been made in Lowton East, where all three seats were previously Conservative. Kathleen Houlton (Conservative) managed to hold onto her seat, but in a nailbitingly close vote, her two Tory colleagues lost out to Labour candidates Jenny Gregory and Garry Lloyd. Congratulations to all three of them.

It means Lowton East has it’s first Labour councillors in many years, certainly the result the Labour campaigners had hoped for, after narrowly missing out in last year’s general election by just 225 votes.

And this time, there were just a handful of votes in it, too – just 84 votes were the difference between red and blue!

The results in full were:

  • Tracy Croft – Labour: 1705
  • Sheila Gough – Conservative: 1734
  • Jenny Gregory – Labour: 1820
  • Edward Houlton – Conservative: 1683
  • Kathleen Houlton – Conservative: 1751
  • Garry Lloyd – Labour: 1818

The turnout in Lowton East was 34.2%- pretty similar to last year’s turnout of 35.3%.

The picture overall

Whilst Golborne and Lowton West remains all Labour with the same three councillors voted back in, the results do mean a bit of a shakeup in Lowton East, which has returned its first Labour councillors in a number of years. We will see what this means in the coming weeks and months!

And the small margins involved really do hammer home that every vote counts. If you took the time to vote – well done.

Congratulations to all the successful candidates.
