Congratulations to Golborne Brass Band, whose performance in a national final at the weekend places them amongst the very best in the country.
The musicians earnt their place in the finals of the Brass Band Championships by sweeping to victory in the North West region in Blackpool earlier this year.
As a result – the 4th Section North West champions headed to the National Finals in Cheltenham at the weekend, where their challenge was to compete against the best brass bands in the land!
After an intense day of competition, with 20 finalists performing in total, our local band were delighted to be named 7th place in the final – an incredible achievement!
Band Manager Norma Tinsley said: “We felt really proud to represent the north west in the 4th Section national finals in Cheltenham.
“The result didn’t reflect the brilliant performance but we still stood proud to have taken part.
“We get a promotion to the 3rd Section next year, and we’re hoping to again take Golborne Brass Band into the area and national finals.
“We also have a busy next few months with lots of concerts so, if you’re interested in seeing us perform locally, please check our website for details.”
About Golborne Brass Band
Golborne Brass Band is currently conducted by Les Webb, who has played for many of the top bands in the country, including the Principal Trombone position with Fairey Band. He’s also played for top bands including Foden’s band and Grimethorpe Band.
Webb’s motto “music is fun” has certainly transferred from the rehearsal room to the competition stage, and the band’s performance in this prestigious national final shows the progress they have made over the last twelve months.
Golborne Band prides itself on its links to the local community, including its proud mining heritage. The Band, including players from Wigan, Warrington and beyond was first formed in 1847, and last year celebrated its 175th anniversary.
In 2021, Golborne Training Band formed to support musicians of all ages and abilities to learn a brass instrument. Golborne Band can be found throughout the year in the Wigan and Warrington areas performing at local concerts and events.
