Golborne Brass Band through to national finals

by Editor

Congratulations to Golborne Brass Band, who are through to the National Finals of a prestigious musical competition.

The musicians earnt their place in the finals of the Brass Band Championships by sweeping to victory in the North West region in Blackpool last month, outplaying competition from 14 other bands from the region.

Now, as 4th Section North West champions, they’re heading to the National Finals in Cheltenham this September, where they’ll compete against the best brass bands in the land.

Golborne Brass Band is currently conducted by Les Webb, who has played for many of the top bands in the country, including the Principal Trombone position with Fairey Band. He’s also played for top bands including Foden’s band and Grimethorpe Band.

Webb’s motto “music is fun” transferred from the rehearsal room to the stage in Blackpool, as the band showed the progress that they have made over the last twelve months.

Golborne Brass band receive an award

Performing Darrol Barry’s work Hungerford Town, a challenging test for the most able of bands, the band focussed on performing “musically and colourfully” to take the title.

And it wasn’t just the band who were recognised during the contest. Golborne’s Soprano Cornet player, Ian Twiss, picked up the only individual award of the competition for Best Soprano Cornet. And a special mention was given to the percussion section, who delivered an outstanding performance on a demanding part.

About the North West Regional Brass Band Championships

76 bands from across the North West were at the Blackpool’s Winter Gardens for the competition, which was split into five sections. Golborne Brass Band’s result will also secure them promotion from the fourth section to the third section from 2024. This means that the band will be working towards a more difficult performance next year, against a new group of competing bands.

Chairman Peter Jackson said: “The band’s recent win at the North West Regional Championships brings twelve months of hard work and dedication to fruition. Representing the North West in Cheltenham is a great honour and the band is looking forward to a fabulous and exciting future.”

Golborne Band prides itself on its links to the local community, including its proud mining heritage. The Band, including players from Wigan, Warrington and beyond was first formed in 1847, and last year celebrated its 175th anniversary.

In 2021, Golborne Training Band formed to support musicians of all ages and abilities to learn a brass instrument. Golborne Band can be found throughout the year in the Wigan and Warrington areas performing at local concerts and events.

With an invitation to the National Finals in Cheltenham, the band will now embark on a fundraising journey, hoping to raise the full costs to cover a trip to Cheltenham, and would welcome discussions with local companies and individuals who would like to support the band. The finals take place on the weekend of 16 and 17 September.
