Christmas is coming – and there’s lots happening locally to get you in the festive spirit.

From Christmas lights to Christmas Fayres – real reindeer to classic films, here’s just a taster of all the seasonal events to look forward to in and around Lowton and Golborne.

25 November – Christmas lights switch-on and reindeer walk, Golborne

Christmas officially starts in Golborne on Thursday, November 25, when the lights are turned on in Peter Kane Square.

Come along and enjoy live singers and music from Golborne Brass Band.  There’ll even be a Christmas Disco!

Meanwhile, you can join a Reindeer Walk from Asda to the square. Pop along to the supermarket from 4.30pm to meet these amazing creatures, then set off in convoy from 5pm.

Local councillor and Wigan Mayor, Cllr Yvonne Klieve will be the guest of honour to switch on the lights.

The fun starts from 5pm.

30 November – 18 December – Rotary Santa visiting Lowton and Golborne

There’s something so magical about Santa arriving down your street in his sleigh, filling the air with Christmas songs!

This lovely tradition continues this year, with Father Christmas once again touring Lowton and Golborne to meet excited boys and girls, thanks to the local Rotary Clubs of Leigh and Newton-le-Willows.

4 December – Golborne Christmas Fair / Market

Organised by Golborne & Lowton West Voice CIC, the Golborne Christmas Fayre and Market takes place on Saturday, 4 December 2021.

Work has been going on since the easing of restrictions to ensure the event can bounce back with a bang.

This year the event will be located on the car park to the rear of Golborne Library, which allows for many more pitches. More than 40 stalls have already been confirmed along with food and drink outlets and more to come!

There will also be a children’s fun fair, and live entertainment will be provided on stage throughout the day. The bill will include Lowton, Golborne and Newton Choir, there will also be a Ukulele band, Golborne Brass Band and special appearances by Aaron Bennett and Kiera Aspinall, two amazing local talents.

The day will start at 10am when the Mayor, local councillor Yvonne Klieve, will open the event, which will run until 6pm.

4 December – Christmas Fayre at Wigan and Leigh Hospice

The annual Christmas Fayre held by Wigan and Leigh Hospice is back for 2021.

This year is the first time that the Christmas Fayre will be held in the grounds of the hospice, which cares for more than 1,200 local people every year.

Stalls selling Christmas gifts, crafts, goodies and refreshments will be there on Saturday, December 4, and visitors can try their luck with raffles and games too.

It’s a chance to see the Hospice’s 30-ft tall ‘Light for a Life’ tree. Covered in lights dedicated to people loved and lost, its a spectacular centrepiece. There’s also the the 5,000 Lights project which will feature another 60 sparkling Christmas trees in the hospice grounds. You can sponsor a tree, whether as a business or an individual. Add a plaque containing a dedication to someone special.

Admission to the Christmas Fayre at Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Kildare Street, Hindley is free of charge. It will open at 12noon at and finish at 6pm.

Weekends in December – Partridge Lakes Cafe Christmas Markets

Every weekend in the run-up to Christmas, Partridge Lakes Cafe in Culcheth will be hosting a Christmas Market.

Come along between 11am-4pm and do some festive shopping in their Winter Wonderland stretch tent!

As always you’ll be able to keep warm and feel extra Christmassy with their amazing range of seasonal coffees – and enjoy lots of other festive treats, too.

10 December – Christmas Film Screening at Leigh Parish Church

Come and watch classic film It’s A Wonderful Life on the big screen at Leigh Parish Church on 10 December 2021 at 7.30pm.

Leigh Film Society have organised the screening – and you can find out more on their website.

Saturday, 11 December – Christmas Fayre and Messy Church at Heath Street Methodist

A Christmas Fayre and Messy Church takes place at Golborne and Lowton Methodist Church on Heath Street, Golborne, on Saturday 11 December from 10am – 1pm.

There’ll be lots of stalls to browse, refreshments to enjoy and lots of fun for the kids, too.

All proceeds go to Church funds and the Epiphany Trust.

Saturday, 11 December – Christmas Craft Fayre at Golborne Parkside

Christmas market stall

This popular Christmas Craft Fair returns on Saturday 11 December 2021 from 10am – 3pm, just in time for you to get those important presents for your loved ones.

Expect a great selection of stalls, offering homemade items such as cakes, candles, key rings, and much much more.

Kitchen and bar facilities are open and entertainment throughout the day.

Sunday, 19 December – Family Carol Service


A Family Carol Service, led by local children and the Golborne Junior Brass Band, will be held at Golborne and Lowton Methodist Church on Heath Street on Sunday, 19 December from 11am.

All are welcome for what promises to be a really uplifting occasion – and one that’s bound to get you well and truly into the festive spirit!
