Volunteers needed to help local adults learn to read

by Editor Lowton and Golborne News

It’s something most of us take for granted – but here in Wigan borough, more than 8% of the adult population are unable to read – and it has a daily impact on their lives.

Now Lowtoner Karen Wood is working as a Regional Adviser with adult literacy Read Easy UK, and hopes to set up a local group to help improve reading levels – and therefore quality of life – for local people.

She is now appealing for volunteers from Lowton and Golborne who would like to get involved, and help play their part in setting up a Read Easy group here.

What is Read Easy UK?

Read Easy UK is a registered charity that supports volunteers to set up Read Easy groups in their own communities.

These groups provide free, confidential, one-to-one support for adults.  Coaching can be face to face or remote.

The volunteer coaches are carefully selected and trained by Read Easy UK’s trainers, who are all adult literacy professionals.

Want to get involved?

Karen is now looking for volunteers to help her set up the Lowton and Golborne Read Easy Group.

She particularly needs someone to act as a ‘Pioneer’ alongside her to get the group established. There will also be opportunities for volunteer coaches and positions available on the group’s Management Board.

The roles include:

  • A ‘Pioneer’ – who will help raise awareness of the group, with the aim of forming a volunteer committee to coordinate activity in the area. The Pioneer will network with organisations to establish interest and support, publicise the project and to find other volunteers to form a team. This person would need to be energetic and enthusiastic, familiar with the local area, organised and self-motivated, good at networking and communicating.
  • Members of a Management Team to coordinate the work of the Read Easy group. The roles include Team Leader, Secretary, Treasurer, Literacy Specialist, Public Relations and more!
  • Co-ordinator – someone who will to support the work of the reading coaches once the group is up and running.
  • Reading coaches – to work with adults learning to read.

Full training is given to all, and you’ll have access to a huge range of resources to support you along the way.
