‘Our Town’ initiative brings clean-up to Golborne

by Editor

Golborne is set to get a spruce up next week as it becomes the latest area of the borough to be part of the latest round of ‘Our Town’ improvements.

The idea of Our Town is to bring together local organisations to help create “cleaner, greener and safer communities”.

Each area of the borough will get an ‘Our Town’ cleanup over the coming nine months, and each one will be slightly different, according to each area’s priorities. In Golborne, it will run from Monday 3 – Friday 14 June and include a cleansing of Peter Kane Square and the Golborne Miners’ Memorial with jetwashing and weed removal. Weeds will be removed from gutters and railings and some overgrown areas cleared and hedges cut back.

Skips will also be put out on Church Street, so that people living in nearby roads can get rid of their bulky rubbish, too; and litter picks will be taking place on both weekends.

The Our Town programme, which is now in its fourth year, is led by Wigan Council also brings together blue light services, community groups and businesses to improve the local area.

Council teams delivering Our Town will visit every ward in Wigan Borough with a programme stretching to next February and with activities including intense deep cleans, clearing and investigating at fly-tipping hotspots, and waste amnesties so that residents can dispose of large items and waste easily and free of charge.

It is expected to come to Lowton in October.

Cllr David Molyneux MBE, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “What makes Our Town different this year is a real focus on how we can work together with our partners to have the greatest impact in every ward.

“From Police, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance service, working with local businesses and community groups, we will all work together to tackle issues that residents tell us are important to them in their area.

“This could be litter or fly-tipping, issues with off-road bikes, or promoting access to health checks.

“Each Our Town visit will be different, with provision and support tailored to what that area needs, so we can have the most positive impact, and deliver real improvements.”
