Lowton & Golborne 2024 Local Election Results

by Editor

Local elections in Lowton and Golborne took place on Thursday, 2 May, 2024 – and the results are now in.

One seat was up for grabs on both the Lowton East and Golborne and Lowton West wards.

There were no surprises in the Golborne and Lowton West ward, where Labour’s Susan Gambles comfortably won another term of office, gaining more than 1,100 votes more than her nearest rival.

Susan has been a local councillor since 2018, is a serving member of Wigan Council’s Cabinet, and the current portfolio holder for housing and welfare. This will be her fourth term as a councillor for Golborne and Lowton West.

But in Lowton East, the winds of change blew, and Conservative councillor Kath Houlton was ousted by the Labour candidate, Mike Smith, who gained 2,179 votes to her 1,845.

Kath has been a local councillor since 2015, and it was just last year that Lowton East had three Conservative councillors. But last year, during the ‘all out’ elections, where all councillors competed for their seats, her two Tory colleagues lost out to Labour, though she kept her seat.

Now, however, the ward has turned completely red, with three Labour councillors – mirroring the picture in Golborne and Lowton West.
